Stone patios: stone floors for living outdoors
Custom Stone Patios in Asheville, NC
Hammerhead Stoneworks builds stone patios that are laid dry over gravel. Beautiful slabs of flagstone are tightly fitted together creating flat surfaces, outdoor floors ideal for entertaining, summertime dining, or just hanging out with a glass of wine in the evening. Decorative gravel fills the joints, which are narrow enough to discourage weed growth and provide great support for patio furniture.
FLAT PATIO SURFACE
Stone is a natural product. It has character- lumps and bumps and rolls that prevent it from being uniformly flat. It takes experience and thoughtful consideration to use natural stone to create a consistently flat and safe surface.
DURABILITY
A well built drystone patio sheds water off its surface and drains effectively through the gravel below the stones. Water is the most destructive element to all construction. By quickly eliminating rain and runoff from the patio, we increase the longevity of the work. A good design must address rainwater and runoff.
ONE-OF-A-KIND BEAUTY
Our patios are beautiful, a balance of larger matrix stones with pleasing patterns of smaller pieces intertwined throughout. Each patio is a unique construction, a dynamic combination of the selected stone, the contour and special nature of the site, and the talents of the builders.
TIGHT STONE JOINERY
The spaces between our patio stones are generally 3/8” to 1/2”of in width and very consistent. Our clean lines and tight, consistent joints are what make our patios instantly recognizable.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Within stonework, there are giveaways, certain tells that indicate the care and craftsmanship of the builders. With patios, the consistency of the joinery indicates a lot. But the real insight is how the patio engages interruptions. How tightly does the patio wrap a downspout or drain pipe? Does the patio meet fence posts or deck columns? Does it connect to steps- up or down- at the right level, with the ideal step height? At Hammerhead, we live for the details.
CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Every patio we build has a detail, a flourish, a creative spark that sets it apart. Sometimes we use river pebbles to create an unexpected texture in the joinery. We have in laid mosaics large and small into patios. We enjoy incorporating personal treasures into our work: rocks our clients have gathered in their travels and other personal totems.

Patio & Firepit
Hammerhead created this patio and firepit, that includes connecting pathways and stairs, storage for firewood, and plenty of room for communal seating. We collaborated with BB Barns to incorporate the natural surroundings and garden plans into the scheme.
Star Mosaic Patio
This patio was designed for a home in Marshall, NC and features a star mosaic inspired by Islamic tile designs, but made from Tennessee sandstone. It incorporates a retaining wall and a bench that echoes the contours of the mountain ridge.
