School Mosaics
In summer 2021, Hammerhead installed the fifth and final mosaic of a public art contract awarded by the city of Norfolk, Virginia. I designed mosaics for five different elementary schools throughout the city. Each design was created based on the identity of the school. I visited each school and met with students and teachers, who told me what their school and community meant to them. It was important to me that the artwork represent the young students, and reflect the values and priorities of the schools and the surrounding communities. The mosaics are thematically linked: diversity, creativity, engagement, and support, but each is its own standalone artwork. My designs were submitted and vetted by the public art commission, as well as leadership and students at the individual schools. We fabricated the mosaics in our Asheville shop, before bringing them to Norfolk to install them. It was an amazing creative and learning experience.
