Stone Walls

Hammerhead Stoneworks specializes in designing and building drystone retaining walls. These walls are ideal for supporting patios and pathways, creating garden beds or leveling a section in your yard. Gravity and careful craftsmanship ensure that the walls stay where we build them. They are gravity walls, which means their ability to retain a bank or support a patio comes from their mass. Hammerhead’s walls are thick, sturdy structures that will outlive timber or block walls. Drystone walls drain rainwater very effectively and do not get pushed over by a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, like a mortared or cement wall will. Hammerhead’s drystone walls are backed with a filter fabric that prevents silt and soil from washing through. And by avoiding mortar and concrete footers, drystone walls are also better for the environment.

The wall design process takes into account many factors, such as grade change, erosion control, stone preferences and stacking style. Drystone walls offer lots of opportunities for creativity within them. Time capsules, candle niches and garages for matchbox cars are a few of the little details that have found their way into Hammerhead walls. In addition to drystone retaining walls, Hammerhead Stoneworks builds freestanding boundary and feature walls. These may be laid dry or with mortar, depending on the specific needs of the project.
