Snapped slabs of Tennessee sandstone make excellent steps. They are sturdy and very consistent, suitable for formal entrances as well as garden steps.

Similar snapped slabs are used here to a very different effect. This semi-circular staircase is made of eight stones stacked on a tightly fitted drystone wall.

This is a photo montage/panorama of steps I built in the Montford district of Asheville. The step treads are made of the full-color variant of Pennsylvania bluestone. The wall, columns and step risers are made of granitic gneiss, mostly from the Hooper’s Creek quarry in Fletcher. Click the image for a larger view.

Pennsylvania bluestone and stainless steel combine to create a dramatic and very modern entrance to an upscale Asheville home. These treads are mortared in place, on Corinthian granite risers, with built in lighting.

Thick slabs of Tennessee sandstone were cut to create these step treads.

Massive chunks of scrap granite mixed with a colorful variety of local stone create an imposing set of steps that are structurally tied into the adjacent retaining walls.

Local field and quarry stones combine to create a new formal entrance to an Asheville bungalow. These steps are stone throughout- not a facade on a block frame- sitting on a concrete slab.
