Making Benches

Hammerhead Stoneworks offers a Do-It-Yourself class on building a free-standing stone bench. Currently this class is offered through the North Carolina Arboretum. If you are interested in having a class, please contact me: marc (at) hammerheadstoneworks (dot) com.

JANUARY 2010 UPDATE: This spring Hammerhead Stoneworks will be leading a class on making Benches on Saturday May 15th at the North Carolina Arboretum. See ya there!

The Stonework Special Projects: Making A Bench class will be a day long, hands-on experience. In the morning we will discuss the design and structural issues of building a stone bench. In the afternoon we will build a freestanding bench ourselves. Topics of note including cutting stone with feathers and wedges and how to move large stones safely. Here’s a section of the slideshow focusing on making a bench in a drystone retaining wall.
