Dentist Wall: Bench installed & plan

Benches abound in my work right now, which is good timing. I’m documenting the process in great detail preparing for my first bench-making class next spring at the Arboretum.

    How is the backrest of the bench supported? Is is supporting a slope of earth, or is it pushing against the wall/seat?

    There’s a bunch of carefully placed rubble and fill below and behind it and the arm rests provide backwards resistance. The back rest sits mostly on the fill, though it does tag behind the bench slab as well. It weighs in excess of 600 pounds, so gravity plays a role in keeping it there.
